Mbare Lot 2
This lot was processed at Rwamatamu’s Mbare washing station in Muhanga. Cherries are hand-sorted on arrival, pulped and fermented in water for 12–48 hours, then washed and dried on raised beds for just over three weeks before moving to Kigali for milling and grading.
What makes this coffee stand out is the structure behind it. Rwamatamu is a family-run producer that works closely with farmers in Nyamasheke and Mbare, and they’ve built two programmes that shape how coffee is grown in the area. The Women’s Cooperative in Nyamasheke cultivates coffee on land provided by Rwamatamu, with seedlings and training supplied by the team. In Mbare, the Youth Association supports growers aged 18–35 as they develop practical skills and build their own production. Both groups sell their coffee back to Rwamatamu, creating a clear route into farming outside of seasonal work.
